The Connemara Tour

"Connemara is a savage beauty"
Oscar Wilde
See the wild unspoilt beauty of Connemara with LALLY TOURS. Learn some fascinating facts and get first hand experience of this rugged land.

Taaffes Bar- Galway's Favourite Traditional Irish Music Bar.

Connemara is celebrated for its magical unspoiled natural beauty and our tour to this rugged region of the West of Ireland promises to be an unforgettable experience for all.

You will be warmly welcomed when touring with Lally Tours, and, if you wish to experience a large area of the magnificent Connemara Region in one day, there is no better way to travel!

Our professional, experienced and entertaining driver-guides will have you fascinated and amazed by their local knowledge and commentary along the route of this leisurely tour. Opportunities to take photos along the way - which are not to be missed in this unique and awe-inspiring landscape - will also, be provided.

Our guided tour of Connemara leaves Galway (from Galway Tourist office- see location map link below) and travels along the leafy road of the beautiful villages of Moycullen and Oughterard.

Oughterard is nestled beside the majestic Lough Corrib (the largest lake in the Republic). This village is Lough Corrib's main angling/ fishing centre and is also referred to as the 'Gateway to Connemara'.

Spectacular scenery surrounds us as we travel on towards Maam Cross. There is a replica of the cottage used in the 1950's John Wayne and Maureen O'Hara film "The Quiet Man" – here at the Connemara "crossroads". 'The Quiet Man' movie was filmed at various locations nearby.

From Maam Cross our Connemara tour heads to Leenane – where we take a short break. Leenane rests snugly in the shadow of the Maamturk Mountains on the southern inner shore of Killary Harbour – Ireland's only fjord. The film 'The Field' was filmed in Leenane.

The world-renowned Kylemore Abbey is our next stop. This is where we stop for our lunch break. The iconic image of the 1860's castle (which became an abbey in 1920) and its surrounding majestic landscape is often used around the globe to portray the beauty of Connemara and Ireland.

Since the 1970's the Benedictine Community have opened their Abbey and Estate to the public and now Kylemore has become known a must see when visiting the west of Ireland. Unique Kylemore Abbey pottery can be purchased in the gift shop and there is also a self-service café (Mitchell Cafe) on the grounds. Time is set-aside for visitors to view the Victorian walled Gardens at the abbey.

After Kylemore we travel through the Inagh Valley, Recess, Screeb, Costello and Rossaveal. Have your cameras at the ready as the scenery along this route is truly breath-taking. You will most definitely spot some world famous Connemara Ponies – which are native to this region.

As we travel along the road we enter Ireland's largest 'Gaeltacht' region. The Irish language (Gaeilge) is still widely spoken in the Connemara Gaeltacht and it is where TG4 the Irish language television station is based.

Passengers on our tour will notice a great variation in the landscape as we travel through the Gaeltacht. You will be spoilt for choice as regards what to photograph. The powerful Atlantic, the rich vista of bogs, scenic valleys and placid lakes are all to be witnessed throughout Connemara.

We pass Baile na hAbhann, and the villages of Inverin and Spiddal on our homeward journey back to Galway City. From these locations you will be able to look across the blue waters of the Atlantic in Galway Bay at the unique limestone landscapeof the Burren and the hills of Clare.

Our last stop on the Connemara tour is at the unique family run store - Standún in Spiddal (An Spidéal). A wide variety of traditional Irish products are available in this store.

We hope to have those traveling with us on the Connemara tour back into the 'City of the Tribes' (Galway) at 5.30 approx

Míle Buíochas (Many thanks) from all at Lally Tours.
