The Aran Islands are located off the west coast of Ireland and are renowned worldwide as the jewels in the crown of Galway bay. They are famous for their geological formation, historical monuments and their linguistic and cultural heritage. The Irish (Gaelic) language is still spoken on the three Aran Islands. Inis Mór Island (Big Island), Inis Meáin Island (Middle island) and Inis Oírr Island(East island). All of these islands are saturated with striking limestone landscapes. A myriad of stone walls, small fields and a maze of bóithríns (small roads) will lead you to all corners of these majestic Islands. The Aran islands are famous for it's Arann Sweater and intricate arts and crafts.

INIS MÓR

Inis Mór is the largest of the three islands. This island has a wealth of Pre-Christian and Christian ancient sites including Dún Aenguson Inis Mór the largest of the Aran Islands. This stone fort was described by 19th century archaeologist George Petrie as "the most magnificent barbaric monument extant in Europe". This site certainly lives up to his description. Standing precariously on the edge of a 100 metre high cliff above the Atlantic Ocean, the fort is a magnificent spectacle. Some of the other attractions on the island include the Bee Hive Hut. These stone houses are unusual as they are oval shaped outside and rectangular on the inside. Saint Benan's Church is also worth a visit. Some say that it is the smallest church in Ireland. It measures roughly 15 by 11 feet, and its gables are approximately 15 feet high. It dates from the 11th Century.

INIS MEÁIN

Inis Meain Island is the second largest of the Aran Islands. This island has a hilly landscape and has fantastic views of the famous Cliffs of Moher in county Clare. Inis Meáin was a retreat for Synge, one of Ireland's most famous playrights. More recently it has become a centre for diving with its beautiful marine life and clear waters.

Some of main attractions on Inis Meáin are Staint Kenderrig's grave which dates back to the 7th Century and is reputably where the Leinster Princess was buried. Ferboy's Fort which is a stone fort dating from the 1st-7th century AD. Synge's Chair & Synge House – which is a 300-year-old cottage, which has been restored to its former glory. It is now a museum to the life and work of the celebrated playwright, John Millington Synge, 1871-1909. Among his many works are 'Riders to the Sea' (1904) hailed by many to be the finest one-act tragedy of the 20th century, and his master drama 'The Playboy of the Western World' (1907). Dermot & Gráinne's Grave which is the earliest of the many historical monuments on the island and was named after tragic lovers from ancient Irish mythology.

INIS OÍRR

Inis Oírr is the smallest of the three Aran Islands. There are many attractions on this stunning island. These include: O'Brien's Castle, a 15th century tower house that stands within a stone fort. Saint Gobnait's Church, the Church of the Seven Daughters, Saint Kevin's Church, St. Enda's Well, Áras Éanna the Island's Arts Centre and of course The Plassey Wreck. This cargo vessel was shipwrecked off Inis Oírr in the 1960s, and has since been thrown above high tide mark at Carraig na Finise on the island by strong Atlantic waves. The islanders rescued the entire crew from the stricken vessel. All three of the Aran Islands have excellent restaurants, pubs and a wide range of accommodation is available including hostels, guesthouses and Bed and Breakfasts.

Visitors wishing to explore the islands can do so by bike, by minibus, by foot or by horse and cart.
